Before the Affordable Insurance Act came into effect, the chances of the young adults not being covered by health insurance were really high. Also, the number of young adults losing private insurance coverage was twice the number of older people. These statistics were revealed in a new survey that was released by the Kathleen Sibelius, the Secretary for Human and Health Services.
One of the older reports by the Human and Health Services displayed that after the implementation of the new affordable insurance act a little over 2.5 million young adults were insured in June 2011 as compared to September 2010. The report released on Wednesday shows that this law will enable young adults to retain as well as gain more health insurance. This is a follow up to other studies and surveys that have shown that young adults will be the ones to benefit the most from this act that has made health insurance affordable to all.
The Secretary, Kathleen Sibelius, also said that the President’s affordable health insurance law was designed with the purpose of making health insurance coverage affordable and accessible to middle class families that value every dollar and want to get the most. The health insurance reform brought into effect recently has done just that. It has made health insurance accessible to young adults and this gives parents the peace of mind that their daughters and sons are covered with sufficient health care in case they fall ill or meet with any accidents.
As per the norms of the new affordable health care law, young adults can continue to be covered under the dependent coverage up to the age of 26, despite moving out of their parents’ home and living independently. The new reforms were effective for all policies that were renewed after the 30th September, 2010.
Steven Giallourakis, who is one among the many young adults who has benefited from this new health insurance law, is a resident of Cleveland who is just 23 years old and has survived cancer twice. He said that he continues to be covered by his father’s health insurance coverage offered by his office. Steven’s mom, Angie, says that she gets to enjoy a certain level of relief since her son is covered by enough health insurance coverage to ensure he stays healthy.
The report released on Wednesday also revealed that adults in the age group of 18 to 25 who held private health insurance till 2008 were not covered by any insurance policy for a month at least over the following years till 2010.
